Brain metastases treatment with alternating electric fields (Optune)

Electric Tumor Treatment Fields (TTF) of specific frequencies are used to kill cancer cells, disrupt their division, and suppress the growth of brain metastases. The Optune device generates a low-intensity electric field. The waves enter the affected area via four wires attached by plates to the patient's shaved head. Cancer cell proteins (such as tubulin and septine) must be arranged in a certain order for successful growth. However, the impact of Optune does not allow them to take the correct positions. That leads to the cessation of cellular division and the death of existing cancer cells. The plates are manufactured and placed individually based on the patient's MRI data. Patients should wear the device constantly, at least 18 hours a day, with small breaks. If necessary, the doctor may change the treatment schedule and use of the device. Optune allows patients to lead a habitual lifestyle without affecting their daily activities. The compact device (the new version weighs just over 1 kg) easily fits in a backpack or shoulder bag. Patients can walk, play sports, travel, and meet friends. A wig or hat makes the device invisible. Optune therapy is well tolerated. The electric field mainly affects cancer cells and does not harm healthy tissues. Only sometimes, there is a side effect in the form of scalp irritation in places of contact with the plates.
