Colon cancer treatment with open colon surgery

Open colon surgery is the complete or partial removal of the colon. The amount of intervention depends on the spread of cancer and tumor location. Before surgery, the patient undergoes a thorough diagnosis to prevent complications. The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The patient is sleeping and does not fill any pain. On average, the surgery takes 2-3 hours. The surgeon makes an incision approximately 25 cm long in the abdomen's central part, separates the colon from the upper part of the rectum, the posterior wall of the stomach, and blocks the blood supply to this area. As a result, it is not only the tumor removed but also part of the healthy intestinal tissue and nearby lymph nodes to prevent relapse. Then the remaining parts of the intestine are connected using sutures or unique surgical staples. Sometimes, part of the small intestine is temporarily removed outside and connected to a special pouch (ileostomy). The operation is completed by washing the patient's abdominal cavity. The surgeon sutures and inserts drainage tubes into the abdomen. After the procedure, the patient is transferred to an intensive care ward, where he wakes up. Then, he is transferred to the surgical department for further recovery.
