Kidney hypertrophy is an organ enlargement caused by inflammation or another kidney disease complication. It occurs primarily in patients who have previously lost a kidney. The main treatment goal is to maintain a healthy kidney, and, in severe cases, dialysis or kidney transplantation might be required.

Hypertrophy means an excess of organ nutrition. It is characterized by a kidney increase in size, so-called enlargement.

Hypertrophic kidney changes are classified into two groups:

  • Vicarious - an increase in the size and function of a single kidney when the second one is removed. In this case, the kidney has to work for two, which is called compensatory hypertrophy.
  • Symptomatic - develops due to inflammation and causes replacement of normal tissues with connective or fatty tissue.

Symptoms of the disease depend on the primary cause. For example, a patient does not experience pain or discomfort when vicarious hypertrophy develops due to kidney removal. The condition is almost asymptomatic. But when kidney hypertrophy arises as a result of an inflammation, the following signs can be reported:

  • Pain in the kidneys area;
  • Body temperature;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Painful urination;
  • Excretion of a small amount of urine;
  • Changes in urine colour.

Kidney ultrasound and typical urine and blood tests are enough to diagnose kidney hypertrophy. Patients with vicarious kidney hypertrophy visit a urologist and undergo periodic ultrasound examinations.

As a rule, vicarious hypertrophy does not require therapy, as it develops temporarily. After the body adapts, the kidney may slowly shrink to its standard size without any treatment. However, doctors recommend hemodialysis when kidney function is severely reduced. During this procedure, the body is cleansed of toxins, and water and electrolyte balance is restored. If a single kidney is damaged and becomes nonfunctional, surgeons perform an emergency kidney transplant.
