Parathyroid cancer treatment with parathyroid removal surgery

Parathyroid gland removal surgery remains among the leading treatment methods for parathyroid cancer. About 70% of all therapeutic approaches are still represented by parathyroidectomy (removal of the parathyroid gland) or a combination of surgery and other methods. Still, preparing the patient before the surgery is crucial, as running some lab tests and examinations before starting the treatment. After medical practitioners ensure that it's more or less safe for the patient to undergo surgery, they set up a specific diet and make other preparations before the treatment. The patient receives general anesthesia right before the surgery and is ready for the treatment sessions. Doctors make a small cut (about 5 to 7 cm) on the patient's neck during surgery. They removed the tumor and the damaged parathyroid gland. Surgeons also carefully examined surrounding tissues to find any signs of involved tissues (especially lymphatic nodes)and remove them. Sometimes, both parathyroid glands and a small part of the thyroid gland also might be removed. Surgical operation for parathyroid cancer helps to eliminate nearly all malignant tissues. However, additional methods might be required to prevent cancer relapses and treat high-grade or high-stage tumors. Among them are radiation or chemotherapy.
