Bone cancer treatment with radiotherapy

The radiotherapy treatment method uses hard ionized radiation to destroy bone cancer cells, reduce pain and prolong the patient's life. The earlier the tumor is detected and treatment is started, the higher the chances of restoring the functions of the musculoskeletal system. Radiation therapy is often performed after chemotherapy, which increases the effectiveness of the combined bone cancer treatment. The planning takes several days. First, the patient must undergo an examination to accurately assess the tumor's boundaries and the surrounding tissues' condition. That may affect the choice of the type of radiation therapy, radiation dose, frequency, and duration of sessions. During the CT simulation, special marks are applied to the patient's skin to help the patient lay down correctly during the sessions. During irradiation, the patient lies on the table. Therefore, it is essential to remain entirely motionless during the irradiation session. Before turning on the device, the medical staff leaves the room and monitors the patient's condition and the course of the procedure with the help of monitors. During the session, the parts of the device and the table with the patient make movements along a given trajectory. Therefore, the effects of radiation are not felt in any way. The radiotherapy session lasts for several minutes. However, the treatment course can include five weekly sessions for 3-8 weeks.
