Ovarian cancer treatment with radiotherapy

Oncologists often use radiotherapy for ovarian cancer if the tumor spreads to other pelvic organs or a patient develops metastatic lesions. Radiotherapy is also helpful if a patient already underwent surgery and chemotherapy but still requires additional treatment. Still, in rare cases, radiotherapy might also be used as a leading treatment method. Before starting the treatment, a patient must undergo a planning procedure that includes CT scans and creating a specific digital 3D model of affected organs that will be used during the process. During radiotherapy sessions, a patient places on a table under the machine that exposes a focused beam of ionizing radiation. As a result, ovarian tumor cells receive damage that prevents them from further development and stops the tumor's growth. Radiation therapy for ovarian cancer patients often performs daily for up to 15-30 sessions. Still, everything depends on the patient's condition and the tumor's response rate during treatment. Therefore, patients might sometimes require a few days of rest between the procedures. Also, some patients might need a few courses of radiation therapy to achieve the best results.
