Sarcoma treatment with chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is widely used to treat sarcomas. It can be prescribed during the preoperative and postoperative periods. The preoperative treatment destroys the tumor and micrometastases and creates conditions for organ-preserving surgery. For this goal, 2-3 courses are carried out with a few weeks' break. Then, with a high sensitivity of the sarcoma to the drug, postoperative chemotherapy can be planned to destroy the remaining cancer cells or metastases. Chemotherapy regimens are developed individually for each patient, taking into account the tumor-specific. Before each drug injection, a blood test is performed. If its results deviate from the norm, chemotherapy is suspended. Chemotherapy is performed on an outpatient basis. Medications are injected into a vein and reach all parts of the body. Some patients require a particular type of chemotherapy – the so-called isolated perfusion of the extremities. To administer the drug, the oncologist separates the blood circulation of the affected limb from the rest of the body. Combining chemotherapy with other therapeutic methods can give additional benefits in reducing the tumor.
