Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment for people with kidney issues, particularly those whose kidneys aren't working as they should. This therapy utilizes the lining of the abdomen or the peritoneum and a cleaning solution to purify blood when the kidneys can't do this. The first step involves a detailed evaluation of the patient's health history and a thorough physical examination, including a consultation with a kidney specialist. Several laboratory tests are conducted to gain more insights into the health condition. Additionally, an ultrasound imaging of the pelvis and abdomen is carried out. Once the condition is diagnosed, the next step is to prepare the patient for the procedure. It involves the placement of a catheter into the abdomen. After this, the patient undergoes a session of peritoneal dialysis, where a special fluid is put into the abdomen via the catheter, which absorbs waste products and excess fluid from the blood. Then, the fluid is drained out of the stomach. This method is especially beneficial for people who may not tolerate rapid changes in fluid balance. Peritoneal dialysis provides more freedom in daily life and diet. It preserves remaining kidney function longer and avoids regular needle insertion, making it a less intrusive choice.
