Thyroid cancer treatment with hormonal therapy

The thyroid gland produces vital hormones, and the central nervous system regulates their necessary level. Its increased amount can cause a recurrence of thyroid cancer. In addition, hypothyroidism (lack of thyroid hormones), which develops after the removal of the thyroid gland, causes many serious complications and, in turn, stimulates the production of TSH. Therefore, patients are prescribed artificial thyroid hormone - L-thyroxine to eliminate hypothyroidism, on the one hand, and on the other, to suppress the production of TSH. Thus, hormone therapy for thyroid cancer is vital to reduce the risk of recurrence. Hormonal drugs are usually available in the form of tablets. A balanced dose of such pills helps the body function properly. The drug dose is selected individually, based on the patient's condition (whether there are symptoms of hypothyroidism or not), as well as the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone. Control tests are performed every three months in the first year after surgery and once every six months throughout later life.
