A gastric balloon is inserted into the patient's stomach. It is filled with air or liquid and occupies a significant part of the stomach. Due to this, the patient can only eat a little. Therefore, a feeling of satiety appears quickly and does not allow him to overeat. Thus, the number of calories consumed and the weight is reduced. The balloon is made of medical silicone. It has thin walls and is low in weight. Its outer surface is smooth. The volume is 400-700 ml. The balloon is injected under general anesthesia or sedation. First, a probe is inserted into the stomach through the mouth (as in diagnostic probing), through which an empty balloon is passed. Then the balloon is filled with air or saline solution. When the entire volume of the balloon is filled, the probe is removed. The balloon itself forms a ball freely located in the stomach. It is not fixed to the gastric wall, and the integrity of the organ is not violated. The total duration of the procedure is 20-30 minutes. The technique is designed for six months because hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach destroys the walls of the balloon. However, exists gastric balloons that stay for 12 months and more. After this period, the balloon is removed or replaced with a new one if it is necessary to continue treatment.
