Arteriovenous malformation treatment with endovascular coiling

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a blood vessel issue that can cause problems like bleeding, seizures, and nervous system issues. Endovascular coiling is a less invasive surgery often used to treat AVMs, usually taking about ten days for preparation and treatment. Surgeons place embolization material inside AVM to close it and stop growing. Patients undergo exams, consultations, imaging tests, neurological evaluations, and lab tests to diagnose and plan the treatment. The procedure typically takes 2-4 hours to complete. First, general anesthesia is administered, making the patient unconscious. A small cut is made, and a thin tube (catheter) is placed into a blood vessel. The catheter is moved through the blood vessels to the AVM using real-time images. Next, the surgeon puts small coils into the problem vessels, which causes blood to clot and stop flowing to the AVM. The success of the coiling is confirmed with imaging tests to ensure the AVM is appropriately blocked. Endovascular coiling has several benefits, such as being less invasive, faster recovery, protecting healthy brain tissue, and a lower chance of infection. The treatment includes preparing the patient for surgery, performing the endovascular coiling (embolization) for AVM, post-surgery care, and treating symptoms.
