Parkinson's disease treatment with deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure that helps people with Parkinson's disease with movement difficulties. DBS uses a small device called a neurostimulator, placed in the brain, to send electrical signals to those parts of the brain that control movement. The surgery helps reduce symptoms like shaking, stiffness, and slow movement, making life easier for patients. Before DBS, doctors ensure the patient is a good candidate for surgery. Next, physicians do tests and check how the medicines are working. Then, the operation is performed under general anesthesia and has two main parts: putting thin wires called electrodes into the brain and placing the neurostimulator under the skin. After DBS surgery, the patient receives postoperative care and symptomatic treatment to manage pain or other discomforts. The neurostimulator is then set up to send the right amount of electrical signals to the brain. Doctors can adjust these settings to help with symptoms and reduce side effects using a remote control device that resembles a mobile phone. DBS is used for people with Parkinson's disease who don't progress with medicines, have severe side effects, or are in the advanced stage of Parkinson's disease.
