Prof. Dr. med. Mathias Maier
ophthalmology

About the department

The department of ophthalmology at University Hospital rechts der Isar of the Technical University (TUM) Munich offers treatment of almost all diseases of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Over 30,000 patients are treated in the Eye Clinic every year. It consists of four outpatient clinics in two buildings: the private outpatient clinic, the general or emergency outpatient clinic, the orthoptics/vision school, and the glaucoma outpatient school. The department treats around 2,500 inpatients and around 25,000 outpatients with more than 60,000 visits every year. About 10,000 eye surgeries are performed annually. Two wards with 24 beds, three operating theatres, and two intervention rooms with the latest generation of equipment are available for this purpose. The department participates in several clinical studies, some of which are international and in interdisciplinary new developments of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. In addition, the interdisciplinary working group "Robotics" develops and tests a robot assistant for vitreoretinal interventions, i.e. retinal and vitreous surgical interventions.

The department's specialisation is posterior eye segment surgery (surgery of the retina and vitreous body), diagnosis, and treatment of retinal and refraction disorders. Numerous approval studies for drugs to treat age-related macular degeneration (wet and dry form), diabetic macular oedema, or macular oedema due to venous occlusion are currently being carried out at the local research centre. Treatment options include all conservative methods, interventional therapy, and surgery.
