Education
- Studied human medicine at the universities of Jena, Freiburg, and London.
- Completed clinical and research training at the Universities of Würzburg, Bonn, and Oxford.
- 2010 Habilitation in ophthalmology.
Experience
- 2012: Appointed to the newly established professorship for degenerative retinal diseases at the University Eye Clinic Bonn, funded by the PRO RETINA Foundation.
- 2013: Appointed Professor of Ophthalmology (Chair for Degenerative Retinal Diseases) at the University of Bonn, Germany, where he also served as Coordinator for Ophthalmology in the Centre for Rare Diseases.
- 2016: Returned to Oxford as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford, focusing on novel treatments for retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and inherited retinal diseases.
- April 2024: Appointed Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich (TUM).
