About the department

The department of ophthalmology at University Hospital Wurzburg (UKW) treats all diseases of the eye, visual pathways and soft tissues around the eye. Thanks to modern technical equipment and experts in every field of activity, the department offers all the prerequisites for accurate and comprehensive diagnostics and innovative and sophisticated therapeutic procedures. The department specialists have the most modern diagnostic procedures, including optical coherence tomography, ultrasound diagnostics, and fundus autofluorescence. Functional and vascular changes are diagnosed using electrophysiological studies, fluorescein angiography and laser scanning methods. Over 20,000 patients, including 5,000 inpatients, are examined and treated in the department annually.

Today, as a centre of maximum care, the university eye clinic offers the entire spectrum of conservative and surgical treatment of the eye. The doctors' main directions will include treating diseases of the retina and vitreous body, glaucoma, tear duct, eyelids and orbit. In addition, the department treats newborns with congenital visual defects, as well as elderly patients with visual impairment for various reasons. Ophthalmologists offer traditional and modern surgical operations, the introduction of modern and effective drugs into the vitreous cavity, and laser therapy for the symptomatic or isotropic treatment of the disease.
