About the department

The department of hand, plastic and aesthetic surgery at University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich provides a full range of plastic and aesthetic surgery services, including hand and microsurgery. The department is famous for complex reconstructive procedures after traumas and microsurgical tissue transplantation. Plastic surgery requires accurate knowledge of the anatomy of the human body, a high degree of flexibility regarding surgical techniques, and competent counselling of the patient about the possibilities and risks. Thanks to innovative technologies, the latest 3D imaging technologies, high-resolution microscopes, access to two fully equipped operating rooms, and a team of 17 qualified doctors, surgical interventions have excellent therapeutic and aesthetic results. More than 1,000 outpatients are served in the department, and more than 3,000 operations are successfully performed per year. The main task of the department is the best treatment of patients. Therefore, scientific activity is developed, including regular publications, trials and participation in world-leading associations. Extensive experience in reconstructive surgery is a prerequisite for successful plastic aesthetic surgery.

The department performs surgical treatment in almost all body parts after injuries, tumours, and congenital malformations. In addition, patients have access to the latest microsurgical procedures, including perforation flaps and lymphatic microsurgery.
