Department of cardiac surgery with TAVI and artificial heart implantation centre

Prof. Dr. med. h.c. Uwe Mehlhorn
cardiac surgery

About the department

The department of cardiac surgery with TAVI and artificial heart implantation centre at Cardiac Surgery Clinic Helios Karlsruhe offers a full range of modern cardiovascular interventions for adults. Furthermore, the department is a certified centre for transcatheter aortic valve implantation by the German Society of Cardiology. Surgeons work following current clinical protocols and adhere to modern hygiene and safety standards. In addition to treating heart diseases, the department's specialists have many years of experience in the surgical treatment of diseases of the aorta, such as aneurysms or aortic dissection. For more than 25 years, the medical institution has been treating patients, including those from other countries, providing them with the highest quality services.

Сardiac surgeons pay particular attention to the minimally invasive TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) technique for heart valve replacement, which is possible without "major" heart surgery. The procedure is especially suitable for patients with increased surgical risk, for whom open chest surgery would be too risky. Four different implantation catheters are implanted at the Helios Cardiac Surgery Clinic in Karlsruhe. Doctors also perform artificial heart implantation, which is often a life-saving treatment option and an alternative to heart transplantation for patients with end-stage heart failure.
