Prof. Dr. med. Markus Guba

Prof. Dr. med. Markus Guba is a highly distinguished surgeon and academic specializing in transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. He currently serves as the Head of the Section of Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery at the LMU Klinikum in Munich, Germany. With over two decades of clinical experience, he is recognized for his expertise in the surgical treatment of complex conditions, particularly malignant tumors of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tract. Beyond his surgical leadership, he serves as the head of the Liver Cancer Center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) Munich LMU. His medical education began at the University of Regensburg and included clinical studies at the Technical University of Munich and the Eberhard-Karls University of Tübingen, where he earned his doctorate with the highest honors (summa cum laude) in 1998. He further refined his expertise through a clinical fellowship in transplantation and hepato-pancreatic-biliary surgery at the Toronto General Hospital in Canada. His research efforts focus on advancing transplantation science through the LMU Transplant Engineering Lab and the Liver Transplant Oncology Study Group. His work explores innovative approaches such as normothermic machine perfusion and gene-editing technologies to improve organ viability and long-term patient outcomes. As a prolific author, he has contributed to scientific publications and book chapters, focusing on topics like transplant oncology, immunosuppression, and the use of machine learning to predict disease survival.
