- 1983 Studied human medicine at Albert Ludwig's University of Freiburg
- Obtaining a license for medical practice
- Received his neurosurgical training at the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg in Breisgau
- 1986 Completed with honors a medical doctorate at the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg in Breisgau
- 1990 Obtaining specialization in neurosurgery
- 1990-1992 Scientific Fellow from the the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation in Bonn and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in Tokyo at the Department of neurosurgery of the Keio University in Tokyo, working in the fields of cerebral and spinal microcirculation and skull base surgery
- 1994 Habilitation and a teaching license
- 1997 Professor permanently by the State of Hessen
