Spinal tumor treatment with radiotherapy

Radiotherapy is a treatment option for spinal tumors that uses high-energy radiation beams to target and destroy abnormal cells. Radiotherapy is often used if surgery is impossible or can be combined with the operation (usually after the surgery) and chemotherapy. Before radiotherapy, patients undergo a series of evaluations, including reviewing medical history, physical examination, and consulting with a radiation oncologist. First, a spinal MRI scan determines the tumor's size and location. Then, lab tests assess the patient's suitability for radiotherapy treatment. The radiotherapy process begins with a planning step called simulation. Patients are placed in the correct position, and scans are taken to identify the treatment area.   3D planning technology helps target the tumor accurately and protects healthy tissue. Radiotherapy is usually given in sessions over several weeks. Patients visit the radiotherapy center daily for a 10-30-minute treatment session. The radiation machine, called a linear accelerator, delivers high-energy radiation beams to the tumor, shrinking the mass. Radiotherapy can be used before or after surgery to help remove tumors. However, radiotherapy can cause fatigue, skin irritation, or temporary swelling in the treated area. Most are manageable and usually resolve within a few weeks after treatment completion.
