Department of oncology

Prof. Dr. Joan Carles Galceran, Ph.D.

About the department

The oncology department at Teknon Medical Center Barcelona offers comprehensive assistance in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of cancer. The department's medical team consists of leading experts from various specialities organized in multidisciplinary committees where all patients are assessed weekly and individually to agree on the best treatment option. The department is committed to the prevention and early diagnosis of cancer, which is why it has created a unit for cancer assessment and prevention. The department has a day hospital, which employs a nursing staff specializing in the preparation and administration of chemotherapy and the care needed by patients during the oncological process. The oncology centre operates around the clock to provide continuous care to any patient or family member who requires immediate assistance from doctors or the nursing team.

The department's surgical unit treats advanced forms of abdominal cancer and gynaecological diseases, especially those that affect the abdominal membrane called the peritoneum. These types of metastases are also referred to as "peritoneal carcinomatosis". In cooperation with the particular surgical unit, the department performs complex surgical procedures combining cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC and has received international recognition for its results. In addition, the department has a certified oncocardiology unit. Oncologists evaluate all patients with cancer who are about to undergo potentially cardiotoxic therapy and adjust therapy depending on the clinical situation.
