Spinal tumor treatment with tumor removal surgery

Spinal tumor removal surgery, or spinal tumor resection, is when a neurosurgeon removes all or part of a tumor from the spinal column. This surgery is employed when other treatments fail to provide adequate relief or when the mass threatens the patient's function or spinal stability. Surgery aims to alleviate symptoms, preserve or restore neurological function, and prevent tumor recurrence. Tumor removal surgery starts with a preoperative assessment. Patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation, including examinations, laboratory tests, and consultations with a neurosurgeon and anesthesiologist. Then the neurosurgeon creates a surgical plan. On the day of the operation, the patient is given general anesthesia. The neurosurgeon selects the most appropriate surgical approach, carefully removes the tumor, and aims for complete resection if possible. The surgeon provides additional support if the spine's stability has been compromised. After the tumor has been removed and the spine is stabilized, the surgeon closes the incision. Following the surgery, the patient is closely monitored in a recovery room, and pain management is provided. Rehabilitation, including physical therapy, may be necessary to aid in the patient's recovery and improve functional outcomes.
