Trigeminal neuralgia diagnosis

The trigeminal nerve is a major cranial nerve that controls sensitivity in the gums, forehead, and cheeks and the movement of the chewing muscles. If this nerve is damaged, it can cause intense pain. Trigeminal neuralgia is diagnosed by a neurologist who may collaborate with other specialists if needed. The diagnosis involves assessing the patient's symptoms and medical history and examining the face for symmetry at rest and when attempting to smile. The doctor may recommend additional tests or evaluations to confirm the diagnosis and eliminate the possibility of other illnesses:Lab tests reveal a lack of vitamins, diabetes, and abnormal immune function and help to determine the cause of diseases. If there is suspicion of an infectious nerve-ending lesion, the patient's blood is analyzed for antibodies. Electroneuromyography detects nerve damage by recording muscle electrical activity. The process requires inserting a tiny needle into the muscle to gauge its electrical activity while it contracts. MRI of the head detects any abnormalities such as pinched nerves, tumors, cysts, inflammation, infection, changes in blood flow, or changes in facial bone structure that may be causing the problem.
