Cerebral palsy treatment with orthopedic surgery

Orthopedic surgery is often necessary for patients with cerebral palsy suffering from dislocations or bone deformities. Lengthening or transferring tendons may be helpful to alleviate spastic imbalance and deforming forces. At the same time, osteotomy can assist in reconstructing affected limbs such as the femur, neck, shin, and heel bone. In addition, reconstructive surgery on the upper extremities helps restore muscle balance, relieve contractures, stabilize joints, increase the range of movement of the arm in space, and allow the patient to perform the functions of free grip, release, and fixation. Operations are being performed:Tendon-muscular plastic surgery (achilloplasty, elongation of the tendons of the flexors of the lower legs, transposition of tendons). It is carried out by the Z-shaped incision method. The duration of surgical intervention is from 10 minutes. The tendon is stretched to the desired length, after which it is stitched. This approach minimally damages the surrounding tissues. On bones and joints (stabilizing operations on the hip joint, elimination of foot deformity, correction of the hand and elbow joint, reduction of the patella). When undergoing surgery, anesthesia with controlled breathing is always used. Orthopedic surgical operations are performed in children older than 8-10 years since there is a high risk of relapse at an earlier age.
