Proctological examination

A rectal exam, also called a proctological exam, is a diagnostic test that looks at the rectum and anus and helps to determine any changes. The proctologist will look at the patient's medical history, symptoms, and, if there are any, medical records. Then, the doctor will look at the patient's anus and rectum to see any signs and symptoms of problems or abnormalities, like hemorrhoids, fissures, or tumors. A digital rectal examination (DRE) uses a gloved, lubricated finger to look for lumps or masses in a patient's rectum. Next, the proctologist will use a proctoscope, an extended, tube-like tool, to look for any problems in the patient's rectum. If the doctor needs to look at a deeper part of the colon, they will do a rigid sigmoidoscopy. Finally, several lab tests will be done, including a complete blood count and a test for inflammation. A proctological exam helps to find hemorrhoids, fissures, polyps, and cancer; identify other health problems, like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Also, regular exam helps to keep track and ensure treatments for rectal or anal conditions are working.
