Cholesteatoma treatment with conservative medications

Conservative therapy for patients with cholesteatoma mainly aims to decrease the severity of symptoms and prevent further disease development. Among the most widely used medications are various antibiotics and topical steroids. Both drugs help decrease inflammation, slowly reducing pain and other cholesteatoma-related symptoms. Mainly, conservative therapy uses in patients who couldn’t undergo surgical treatment for some reason (e. g. , other diseases, severe contraindications, etc. ) and can help to achieve a sustainable disease management rate in most cases. Unfortunately, those drugs can’t prevent or cure cholesteatoma. So, currently, patients with that disease will face regular aggravation until they become applicable for surgery treatment. Yet, in 2023, a new drug was created and might soon be used as a standardized treatment method. It’s called Menin-MLL inhibitor, MI503, which aims to impact the keratinizing squamous epithelium (the main structural element of cholesteatoma) and slowly destroy cholesteatoma. Medical practitioners have already got some positive lab results. So, MI503 is believed to cure and prevent the recurrence of cholesteatoma but still needs to be approved by FDA before using on patients.
