Vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy combines laser therapy with the introduction of the TOOKAD drug in the vessels of prostate lesions. It is a photosensitized substance obtained from aquatic bacteria capable of absorbing light energy. Tookad is administered intravenously for the first 10 minutes. The light activates a photochemical reaction in the cells that damages the vessels feeding the tumor and destroys cancer tissue.
