Tooth extraction

Tooth extraction is an outpatient minimally invasive procedure in removing a tooth from the mouth because of severe decay, gum disease, infection, overcrowding, or a wisdom tooth. Before the procedure, the dentist will take the patient’s clinical history and perform a physical exam of the tooth and surrounding area to determine the extent of extraction required. The dentist will also consult with the patient and require a panoramic X-ray to provide a detailed view of the tooth roots. Local anesthesia minimizes discomfort during the extraction. The tooth extraction involves using tools to loosen and remove the damaged tooth. The dentist may need to incision the gum. The tooth may need to be divided into smaller pieces for easier removal. It will provide post-procedure care instructions to the patient, including recommendations for at-home oral hygiene, such as avoiding brushing the extraction site for the first 24 hours. The dentist prescribes pain relievers or antibiotics to manage discomfort or prevent infection. Symptomatic treatment may also be provided, such as cold compresses to reduce swelling or pain relief gels for oral use. After tooth extraction, the dentist may recommend maintaining good oral health. By following them, patients can prevent other extractions in the future.
