Spinal tumor treatment with chemotherapy

Chemotherapy, in the case of spinal tumors, uses powerful drugs to destroy abnormal cells. It is used when surgery is unsuitable or the tumor cannot be entirely removed. Before chemotherapy, patients undergo examinations, such as reviewing medical history, having a physical exam, and consulting with an oncologist. Laboratory tests like complete blood count and biochemical analysis of blood are performed. An MRI scan of the spine helps determine the tumor's size and location. The chemotherapy starts with a port placement if needed to make drug administration easier. Then the first chemo course is given. After that, the chemotherapy usually is passed through a vein (intravenously). Chemo drugs are usually given in cycles, with each treatment period followed by rest to let the body recover. The number of sessions and the treatment duration depends on the tumor type and drug response. Sometimes, chemotherapy is combined with other treatments like surgery or radiation therapy to improve the overall result and reduce the risk of tumor recurrence. Chemotherapy can help shrink tumors, making them easier to remove through surgery or reducing pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, which may relieve pain and other symptoms. In addition, therapy can slow tumor growth and prevent a mass from compressing vital structures.
