Brain tumor treatment with MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS)

Focused ultrasound surgery is a non-invasive method that uses high-intensity ultrasound waves guided by an MRI scanner to treat brain tumors without cutting or opening the skull. This approach results in shorter hospital stays and fewer side effects than traditional surgery. During the 10-day therapy, patients receive a complete evaluation, including meetings with brain surgery specialists and anesthesiologists, lab tests, brain exams, MRI scans, and other tests like X-rays and EEGs. After this, the medical team creates a personalized treatment plan for each patient. On the day of the procedure, the patient is given general anesthesia. Next, their head is secured in a specialized frame to prevent movement. Next, they are placed in the MRI scanner's tunnel, and a helmet emits ultrasound waves. The surgeon can view the brain's structures and direct the ultrasound beams at the tumor. The focused ultrasound targets and heats the tumorous tissue to 80°C, effectively destroying it without harming the surrounding brain tissue. The surgeon closely monitors the patient due to MRI thermometry throughout the process to minimize side effects. The procedure can be repeated if needed. After the treatment, postoperative care and symptomatic therapy, including pain-relief medications, are provided to ensure patient comfort and recovery.
