Bladder cancer treatment with transurethral bladder tumor resection

Various minimally invasive surgeries treat most early-stage and some advanced bladder cancers. The main idea of the procedure is to avoid any possible and unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissues and try to save as many organ tissues as possible. Transurethral bladder tumor resection is one of the most widely used methods of minimally invasive treatment of bladder cancer. Yet, to schedule surgery, medical practitioners should ensure that the patient is eligible for this type of treatment. That’s why they prescribe a list of lab tests, medical imaging procedures, physical examinations, and other diagnostic procedures. Also, they ask patients to undergo coagulation studies so it would be easier to prevent bleeding and transfuse blood if needed. The transurethral bladder tumor resection is performed under general anesthesia, so the patient will sleep and feel nothing during surgery. Urologists and surgeons insert a cystoscope (an optical device to look inside the bladder) or small cameras and instruments on an elastic, thin basis. Next, they remove the tumor and involved tissues (if possible), and the surgery ends. Usually, the whole treatment session takes from 40 to 90 minutes.
