Trigeminal neuralgia treatment with glycerol injections

Glycerol injections for treating trigeminal neuralgia can help get rid of nerve inflammation. The therapy belongs to nerve blockage, but doctors use a special solution (glycerin) to block the nerve. First, the patient is given local anesthesia before inserting a specialized needle through the cheek at the base of the skull. Then, a needle is guided to a small bag of cerebrospinal fluid located around the root of the trigeminal nerve. Once the needle is inserted, a small amount of glycerin is released, which can block the nerve's ability to transmit pain signals or promote nerve healing. This procedure is safe and takes less than 15 minutes, with pain relief being felt a few hours after the injection. While this type of treatment is effective for most patients, some may experience recurring pain and tingling or goosebumps on the face. Sometimes, treated patients may develop a disease relapse within 3-4 years.
