Bone cancer treatment with targeted therapy

Targeted therapy uses drugs that block the growth and development of genes, proteins, and other tissues on the surface of bone cancer cells. Targeted drugs work only against cancer cells, so they do not affect healthy tissues. This therapy can be prescribed with radiation and chemotherapy for some bone sarcomas. Bone cancer uses "switches" of cellular proteins that give the wrong cell signals to help them grow and multiply. For a cell to divide, it must stock up on nutrients, synthesize all the necessary cellular structures, and double the genome. Specific proteins regulate all these processes. Targeted drugs block these proteins, thus inhibiting the process of reproduction of malignant cells. That stops or slows down the development of the tumor in the bone. Targeted therapy transforms cancer from a rapidly developing fatal disease into a long-term chronic one. That makes it possible to prolong the patient's life and gives the opportunity to "peacefully coexist" for many years. The treatment has few indications and is frequently prescribed with other methods. However, targeted therapy for bone cancer can be a good choice along with chemotherpay before the surgery.
