Polycystic kidney disease treatment with laparoscopic kidney surgery

When evaluating kidney function or for other medical reasons, doctors may deem it unnecessary or harmful for a patient to keep their kidney. Physicians may suggest laparoscopic kidney removal surgery as a treatment option. This method is traditionally associated with fewer post-surgery complications, a more effective and fast post-surgical period, and generally better surgery results than open kidney surgery. At first, the patient must undergo some lab tests, medical imaging procedures, and other examinations to ensure they can handle the surgery. The only available option before the surgery is general anesthesia so that the patient will be utterly out-conscious during the surgery. Surgeons create small incisions on the patient's body and place tiny, flexible manipulators with instruments and cameras inside the patient's body. Usually, the operation takes up to a few hours. Surgeons observe and guide their actions according to the picture from the camera and perform all their actions with manipulators, which replace their hands during surgery. When the kidney affected by polycystic disease is wholly separated from the surrounding tissues, surgeons remove it by slicing it into a few smaller parts and placing small sutures on the incisions.
