Pre-Surgical Epilepsy Diagnostics at Beta Clinic Bonn

Pre-surgical epilepsy diagnostics at Beta Clinic Bonn (Beta International Epilepsy Centre) is an advanced functional and imaging-based work-up designed to confirm the diagnosis, characterize seizure type and history, review medication response (including anti-epileptic drug levels), and clarify potential causes (including genetic and autoimmune etiologies). The core objective is to identify the brain region generating seizures and determine whether surgery is feasible and appropriate. The presurgical protocol combines long-term video/EEG monitoring with high-resolution brain imaging and metabolic studies to localize the seizure focus, and, when needed, direct recordings from implanted electrodes (electrocorticography) and stereotactic electrode implantation in cooperation with neurosurgery. It also includes mapping nearby “eloquent” brain areas to reduce functional risk, using tools such as language fMRI (or Wada testing) and cortical electrostimulation, along with standardized neuropsychological testing to document baseline cognition and enable postoperative comparison.
