Thymus cancer treatment with robotic-assisted thymus removal

Thymus surgery assisted by robots (robotic thymectomy) is known to have greater precision and lower risk of complications than surgeries performed without robotic assistance. Surgeons use the DaVinci system to perform such interventions. Nevertheless, such an approach is possible for certain patients. It helps achieve less complication rate and quicker recovery thanks to millimeter precision. As before any surgery, some preparations are required before thymectomy, including a comprehensive physical and medical history exam. The only available option for DaVinci thymus operation is complete anesthesia. The robot's main port with the camera, manipulators (also called robotic arms), and surgical equipment is placed over the patient. At the same time, a surgeon manages all the actions from the control point. During the surgical procedure, the thymus is accessed by cutting through the breastbone. Surgeons carefully separate the organ from the surrounding tissues and extract it, along with other affected organs and tissues contributing to the cancerous growth. Finally, the medical practitioner stitches the breastbone and sends the patient to the ward. All the removed tissues and organs are sent to the pathology unit for the subsequent histopathological specimen examination. It will help oncologists get more information about cancer's features and develop a set of methods that will effectively prevent possible relapses.
