Gastric plication surgery

Gastric plication surgery is an operation to reduce the volume of the stomach. The weight-loss operation is performed under general anesthesia. It lasts about 1 hour. First, the surgeon makes five small punctures in the abdomen. Then, medical ports are placed in them to insert instruments, including a camera with which the surgeon can see what is happening in the abdominal cavity. The procedure uses sewing and folding techniques. First, the surgeon wraps the stomach walls inside and stitches the front and back walls. As a result, it becomes similar to a banana – a narrow and long tube, which is 70-85% smaller in initial volume. During the operation, nothing is cut off or removed from the body. Therefore, normal anatomy is not violated. Food, getting into a tiny stomach, stretches its walls and creates an early feeling of fullness and satiety. Weight loss occurs in the first two years and usually reaches 80% of excess weight.
