Sciatica treatment with decompression surgery

Decompression surgery is used for severe cases of sciatica, a condition due to the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. Before the surgery, an evaluation is performed. Consultations with a neurosurgeon, an anesthesiologist and lab tests are also done to confirm the patient's suitability for the procedure. MRI scan of the spine is used to help the surgeon visualize the compression area. The treatment begins with preoperative preparation. Decompression surgery, also known as a microdiscectomy, is then performed under general anesthesia. During this procedure, the surgeon removes a small part of the bone or disc material pressing on the sciatic nerve. Postoperative care includes pain management and physical therapy to help the patient return to normal activities. Symptomatic treatment, like medications for pain relief, may be continued. Decompression surgery is considered when conservative treatment options have not provided sufficient relief or when the sciatica is severe and disabling. It also is recommended for the signs of nerve damage, such as weakness or loss of bowel or bladder control. Decompression spinal surgery can significantly reduce or eliminate pain by removing the source of pressure on the sciatic nerve. Furthermore, it can improve other symptoms like numbness, weakness, and the patient's activity.
