Pulmonological (lung) examination

A pulmonological examination is a medical assessment of the lungs and the respiratory system. The study typically includes taking a patient's medical history, performing a physical exam, and ordering additional tests. During the pulmonological check-up, a pulmonologist will:Take a patient's medical history and previous records. They should include information about any respiratory symptoms they may be experiencing, past medical conditions, and any medications they are currently taking. Listen to the patient's breathing with a stethoscope to check for abnormal sounds, such as wheezing or crackles. Palpate (feel) the patient's chest and back to check for any masses or tenderness. Perform a functional lung test (peak flow test and spirometer) to measure how well the patient can breathe.  Check the patient's oxygen saturation levels using a pulse oximeter. Order additional tests such as blood analyses, chest X-rays, high-resolution CT scans (HRCT), and bronchoscopy. All of this help to confirm or rule out the diagnosis. A pulmonological examination aims to identify any potential issues with the lungs or respiratory system. For example, lung infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), etc. All these tests help the pulmonologist to make an appropriate diagnosis and develop a treatment strategy.
