Epilepsy treatment with anti-seizure medications

Anticonvulsants are in first place in epilepsy treatment protocols worldwide. Medications reduce the activity of nerve cells in the brain, allowing them to function normally. A neurologist prescribes a specific drug or combination to each patient. In some cases, carbamazepine and benzonal or valproates are prescribed. Recently, the FDA approved a drug derived from medical cannabis (Cannabidiol) that effectively reduces the frequency of seizures. For many patients, taking one or a group of drugs improves well-being or gives complete control over attacks. The dosage should be chosen so that the drug effectively prevents seizures but at the same time gives the least number of side effects. If monotherapy (a single drug) does not bring the desired results, doctors resort to combination therapy (2 or more drugs simultaneously). In exceptional cases, for example, West's syndrome, it is possible to use adrenal gland hormones (Prednison, Dexamethason). Taking medications should be continued even after the cessation of seizures for an extended period. For example, children can try to stop taking drugs two years after the seizures stop, and adults - five years after the last attack. However, such a decision to slowly reduce the dosage or cancel medications is made only by a doctor.
