FAQ
What is meniscus transplantation?
Meniscus transplantation involves implanting a new meniscus, usually sourced from a cadaver, into a patient's knee joint. Technically termed meniscal allograft transplantation, this procedure is performed using arthroscopy.
How is a meniscus transplant done?
The procedure is generally carried out with knee arthroscopy. The surgeon makes two or three small incisions around the knee, pumps saline into the joint to expand it, and inserts an arthroscope through one of the incisions.
What material is used for knee meniscal transplants?
Meniscus transplants typically use healthy cartilage tissue from a human donor, referred to as an allograft. This tissue is carefully sized, tested for diseases, and preserved. Correct sizing is crucial for the transplant's success.
