About the department

The department of rheumatology, autoimmune diseases, and nephrology at University Hospcital rechts der Isar of the Technical University (TUM) Munich is a nationally and internationally leading institution. They cover the entire spectrum of nephrology and specialize in rare and complex diseases. At the TransplanTUM transplant centre, kidney transplants, living kidney donations, kidney-pancreas transplants, and liver transplants are highly specialized. The ward contains 24 beds, and all of their modern single and double rooms are equipped with barrier-free bathrooms and safes for storing valuables. Each bed has a TV system and telephone line. The scientific focus of the department lies in dialysis research, chronic kidney failure and kidney transplantation, rheumatism research, and ultrasound research. Moreover, the department offers training programs certified by the State Medical Association of the German Society for Ultrasound and Medicine (DEGUM).

Dialysis is provided in the full range of its possibilities and diagnosis and treatment of other nephrological diseases. Additionally, the department is heavily equipped with "high-end devices", different ultrasound machines of the latest generation. Further treatment and diagnostic spectrum include rheumatological diseases, autoimmune conditions, secondary hypertension, and rare and metabolic disorders.

Treatment and diagnostic focus of the department

Nephrological and rheumatological diagnosis

  • Sonography of different organs (ultrasound)
  • Echocardiography (ultrasound examination of the heart)
  • Diagnostic, ultrasound-guided puncture of abdominal organs
  • Fine-needle puncture of the thyroid
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic puncture of ascites (water belly) and pleural effusions (chest cavity effusion)
  • Capillary microscopy
  • Joint puncture with immediate microscopic examination of the synovial fluid

  • Systemic autoimmune diseases with renal involvement
  • Genetic kidney diseases (familial cystic kidneys, M. Fabry, Alport syndrome)
  • Clarification of secondary causes of high pressure such as renal artery stenosis, hormonal disorders such as overactive adrenal glands (hyperaldosteronism)
  • Metabolic diseases and other rare diseases
  • Fabry and Gaucher disease
  • Inflammatory joint and spinal diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis (psoriasis), etc.)
  • Collagen diseases – autoimmune diseases of the connective tissue
  • Vasculitides – inflammatory diseases of the blood vessels
  • Sarcoidosis (Boeck's disease)
  • IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD)
  • Hereditary (hereditary) periodic fever syndromes and other autoinflammatory syndromes
  • Rare inflammatory diseases such as Behçet's disease, relapsing polychondritis
