What is Cryosurgery?
Cryotherapy destroys a tumor using ultra-low temperatures, from -90 to -200°C. Instant freezing with liquid nitrogen or argon causes the death of cancer cells. At a negative temperature, the liquid inside the cells freezes. As a result, ice crystals form inside small vessels feeding the tumor, blood clots form, and cancer cells die.
The procedure's duration with the preparation is 1-3 hours. The course of cryosurgery treatment may involve several sessions and is practically painless. However, the patient may feel slightly burning and tingling when freezing. In treating neoplasms on the skin, freezing substances are sprayed from a can. General anesthesia is not required.
Treatment of deeply located tumors requires the introduction of one or more cryoprobes through point incisions or punctures. It is performed with local anesthesia. As the probe's temperature decreases, it adheres tightly to the body tissue. And freezes it to the desired depth for 30-120 seconds. Then the temperature of the probe rises, and it is easily separated. The accuracy is controlled by magnetic resonance or computed tomography.
