Department of obstetrics

Prof. Dr. med. Frank Louwen
obstetrics and gynaecology

About the department

The department of obstetrics at University Hospital Frankfurt am Main of Goethe-University offers highly specialized interdisciplinary care for mother and child in all questions relating to pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The multicultural team consists of two professors, 11 senior physicians, assistant physicians, a research group, pediatric nurses, and midwives/maternity nurses who are always available to advise families. In addition, two IBCLCs (internationally board-certified lactation consultants) lactation consultants and practice instructors are employed at the department. With around 2200 births, the facility focuses on family-oriented obstetrics. In addition to university training for physicians, midwives and maternity nurses are trained together with the Carl Remigius School. Furthermore, the department offers participation in the Team baby project, a web app designed by communication trainers, doctors, and psychologists for the best experience during childbirth.

Traditional visualization and advanced (punctures, genetic testing) screening methods are available for diagnosis and pregnancy management. Vaginal deliveries with breech positions and twins, natural birth positions, breastfeeding promotion, and bonding support are just as much a part of the focus as the care of high-risk pregnancies.
