Department of internal medicine (gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology, diabetology, nutritional medicine)

The department of internal medicine (gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology, diabetology, nutritional medicine) at University Hospital Frankfurt am Main of Goethe-University provides diagnosis and therapy of all diseases, including oncological problems in the specialist areas. The department has an efficient and excellently equipped central endoscopy facility in which all diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic examinations of the bronchi, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, bile ducts, and pancreas can be carried out. Special parts of the department include University Liver Center (founded in 2007) and University Lung Center, with interdisciplinary teams working together in a specified narrow area for best results. In 2018, another liver-focusing group formed - The Translational Hepatology Section, combining translational research with practical clinical application.

Using an endoscope, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract and the bronchial system can be stopped, polyps can be removed, and a narrowing of the oesophagus, intestine, or bile ducts can be expanded endoscopically. Within the framework of interventional endoscopy, tumours can be treated in a targeted manner (laser treatment, insertion of metal and plastic prostheses, photodynamic therapy, etc.). All systemic chemotherapies are carried out following the guidelines.
