About the department

The department of infectious diseases at University Hospital Frankfurt am Main of Goethe-University leads the clinical, teaching, and scientific work in their field. The department has experience in treating highly pathogenic infectious diseases, from the first treatment of Marburg disease in 1967 to the treatment of several patients with SARS disease, Lassa fever, and patients infected with the Ebola virus nowadays. The department has an outpatient part consisting of general infectious diseases and tropical medicine offices, the HIVCENTER (the first HIV patient in Germany was diagnosed and treated at the department in the 1980s), and the interdisciplinary vaccination consultation. Inpatient facilities are the ward and isolation unit. The isolation unit in its modern form was opened in 2002 and has been modernized several times since then. The scientists at the facility research HIV, invasive mycoses, multi-resistant bacterial pathogens, newly emerging and highly pathogenic infections and carry out clinical microbiome research.

The range of treatments includes illnesses caused by viral, bacterial, parasitic pathogens and fungi. Infections treated particularly frequently at the department are tuberculosis, malaria, and complications of HIV / AIDS. Treatment includes conservative (medications), intensive care, and vaccination/prophylaxis.
