About the clinic

Munich Clinic Harlaching is a top-tier super-maximum care facility and one of the most significant medical institutions in Southern Munich. As an academic teaching hospital for the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), it bridges the gap between high-level university research and bedside patient care. The year 2026 marks a historic turning point for the clinic: following five years of construction, the hospital has fully transitioned into a brand-new, five-story central building. This 31,000-square-meter facility is currently the largest new hospital construction in all of Bavaria, designed to house all medical disciplines under one roof and replace the older pavilion-style structure. The hospital’s medical power is anchored in its status as a Level-1 Trauma Center and its nationally recognized Perinatal Center (Level 1). The clinical team, comprising roughly 300 doctors and over 600 nursing specialists, manages a massive workload, welcoming nearly 2,000 newborns annually and providing specialized care for premature infants weighing less than 1,000 grams. Harlaching is also a leading hub for neurology and stroke medicine; its certified Stroke Unit is among the most active in Germany, using real-time digital imaging and minimally invasive catheter technology to treat acute brain infarctions. Beyond trauma and emergency medicine, Harlaching is renowned for its cardiology department, which specializes in heart valve repair and rhythmology, and its comprehensive center for hematology and oncology. The facility also includes a unique "Clinic for Naturheilkunde" (Naturopathy and Homeopathy), which offers integrative medicine by combining conventional clinical diagnostics with scientifically recognized alternative therapies. The new building features 17 high-tech operating rooms and fully digitized patient rooms equipped with multimedia systems that allow patients to control their environment and access their recovery plans directly from their beds.

FAQ

What directions are the most important for the clinic?

The hospital has focused on musculoskeletal care, reproductive medicine, women's health, and pediatrics for many years. Conservative and surgical treatment is carried out according to international standards, ensuring the fastest recovery and a comprehensive solution to health problems.

Is Munich Clinic Harlaching equipped with modern leukemia treatment methods?

Thanks to experienced professors in hematology, the clinic offers treatment of the most complex hematological malignancies through high-dose chemotherapy or whole-body irradiation, during which the bone marrow is destroyed. So patients can have stem cell transplants afterward.

Does the hospital offer advanced breast reconstruction techniques?

Surgeons use sophisticated, innovative reconstruction techniques using the patient's body tissue from the abdomen or thighs (and in very slender women, also from the buttocks) to create natural-looking breasts and better healing. DIEP procedures reduce the risk of abdominal wall hernias in the future.

Will I be able to walk quickly after joint replacement?

Thanks to the latest technologies, rapid rehabilitation is available in the hospital. Patients can regain mobility and quickly eliminate pain. Doctors use high-quality, low-wear materials for artificial joints (TEP, arthroplasty).

What are the main advantages of the new 2026 hospital building?

The new facility eliminates the need for long outdoor transfers between pavilions. Everything from the emergency room to the intensive care units and the maternity ward is now interconnected, significantly speeding up life-saving interventions. The building is also designed for "Healing Architecture," featuring light-flooded rooms and green spaces to improve patient well-being.

Is Harlaching specialized in pediatric care?

Yes. Through the Safra-affiliated pediatric units and its Level-1 Perinatal Center, Harlaching provides the highest possible level of care for newborns and children. This includes specialized pediatric traumatology and a dedicated pediatric emergency department available 24/7.

How does the "Integrative Medicine" department work?

The Clinic for Naturheilkunde (KfN) in Harlaching treats chronic conditions such as rheumatism, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain by combining evidence-based conventional medicine with naturopathic methods, including hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and specialized nutritional therapy.
