Department of orthopaedics and sports orthopaedics

Prof. Dr. med. Rudiger von Eisenhart-Rothe
orthopaedics surgery, pediatric orthopedics and sports traumatology

About the department

The department of orthopaedics and sports orthopaedics at University Hospital rechts der Isar of the Technical University (TUM) Munich manages all supporting and musculoskeletal system diseases, i.e. the bones, joints, muscles ligaments, and tendons. Every year, the department implants more than 1,000 prostheses at the certified maximum care endoprosthetic centre (EndoTUM). The musculoskeletal tumour centre (MSTZ) / sarcoma centre is certified as a member of the oncological centre and was established as a pioneer throughout Germany. The department provides medical services for more than 1,800 inpatient and 8,900 outpatient cases every year. There are ultra-clean air operating rooms to reduce the risk of infection, and 44 beds for inpatient stays in two wards. The department is equipped with the latest surgical techniques covering the entire spectrum of orthopaedics at the highest level. Scientific subjects of interest are biomechanics, tissue engineering, infections related to implants, Virtual Medicine, and neuroorthopaedics.

In addition to general orthopaedics, these are the following sub-specialities: joint replacement (knee and hip), replacement of artificial joints, foot orthopaedics, joint-preserving orthopaedics (especially hips), septic orthopaedics, and pediatric orthopaedics. A particular emphasis is placed on treating tumours and the comprehensive care of cancer patients.
