About the department

The department of internal medicine (gastroenterology, endocrinology, diabetology, infectiology, hepatology) at University Hospital rechts der Isar of the Technical University (TUM) Munich has over 60 doctors and over 190 employees in nursing, administration, and research. The department consists of the following parts: General internal medicine ward with a focus on infectiology, endocrinology/diabetology, and gastroenterology; General internal medicine ward with a focus on gastrointestinal oncology, endoscopy, and gastroenterology; General internal medicine ward with a focus on hepatology, transplantation, and gastroenterology; Internal intensive care unit; Interdisciplinary Admissions Station. As a department with a long tradition in patient-oriented clinical research and internationally recognized experimental study, they integrate current scientific findings into everyday clinical practice. More than 5,000 patients are treated annually in the department. In addition, around 15,000 outpatients are received per year. The emphasis of scientific research is placed on the development of cancer and acute and chronic inflammation of the organs of the gastrointestinal system. 

The diseases of the entire spectrum of gastroenterology (diseases of the gastrointestinal tract), endocrinology, diabetology, and infectiology form the diagnostic and treatment focus of the department. The department uses interdisciplinary methods to enable optimal care. They offer non-surgical prevention, intensive care and treatment of tumours.

Treatment and diagnostic focus of the department

Treatment of gastroenterological disorders:

  • Gastrointestinal diseases (including infections and tumours)
  • Chronic virus-related liver inflammation, metabolic and autoimmune liver and bile duct diseases, and liver cirrhosis.
  • Disorders of the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid, sex glands (ovaries and testicles), and lipid and bone metabolism disorders
  • Neuroendocrine tumours.
  • Diabetes mellitus, 
  • Pancreatic diseases, 
  • Metabolic syndrome 
  • Gestational diabetes.
  • HIV-infected patients and patients with other defects in the immune system.
  • Multi-organ failure
  • Sepsis (blood infection)

Diagnosis:

  • Endoscopy (visualization of stomach or colon) 
  • Sonography or ultrasound (visualization through the anterior abdominal wall) 
  • All gastroenterological and endocrinological functional examinations
  • Laboratory diagnostics
