Prof. Dr. med. Rainer Freynhagen, DEAA
pain therapy and palliative medicine

About the department

The department of pain medicine at Rehabilitation Centre Benedictus Feldafing is one of the largest and most renowned European institutions for multimodal therapy of patients with chronic pain. Different professional groups work with other methods but always within an overall treatment plan and constant mutual exchange. In addition to relieving the pain, improving the functionality and quality of life is the focus of the therapy. The department's large team consists of doctors from various disciplines, psychologists, qualified sports teachers, physiotherapists and training therapists, art therapists, social workers and nursing staff specially trained in pain therapy. The department's utmost goal is the improvement of physical outcomes (pain intensity and physical activity), psychological outcomes (emotional wellbeing), social outcomes (satisfaction with social roles, social activities and productivity) and thus, patient's health-related quality of life.

The department provides comprehensive treatment where in addition to medical therapy, various other specialized therapeutic interventions based on the biopsychosocial model of pain origin and chronic pain development are added.
